Born in 1971 in the province of Zhejiang in the south east of China. Today he is considered as one of the most remarkable Chinese composers of his generation.

Musheng studied the counterpoint, orchestration and composition at the Shanghai Conservatory with the Chinese masters Chen Mingzhi, Yang liqing and Zhao Xiaosheng etc. He settled in Europe in October 2000, where he received his diploma in 2004 at the Conservatory of Geneva after studying with Eric Gaudibert, than he takes part in the master classes with Klaus Huber in Lugano.From 2004 to 2005 he lived in Paris as a composer in residence at the Cité International des Arts. From September 2006 onwards, he will be teaching at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Musheng's music is profoundly influenced by Chinese traditional culture and Buddhist philosophy. He is an exponent of the "Art of One Note's World" and "Pitch-Axis Composition" theories, which are based on the "one note" and "Yun-Gong-Diao" principles of Chinese traditional music, respectively. He first drew public attention when his concert-portrait Ch´an (Suite) took place at the studio of the Radio DRS2 in Bern in 2002. Since then, his music is regularly played worldwide in major centers and music festivals.

He receives numerous commissions from the Berliner Philharmoniker, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Emilia Romagna Festival(Italy), Commande d’Etat (France), Pro-Helvetia (Switzerland), NZTrio, etc. He has also worked with distinguished ensembles and orchestras such as the Arditti String Quartet, Berlin Philharmonisches Stringquintett, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Nieuw Ensemble Amsterdam, Collegium Novum Zürich, Ensemble Europeo Antidogma Musica, etc.

In 2007 he burst onto the international scene when his A Dream in the Peony Garden, a orchestra piece was inspired by the ancient Chinese Kun opera Peony Pavilion, premiered under the baton of Muhai Tang at the Young.Euro.Classic Festival, received acclaim in Germany, Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, Spain, New Zealand, Finland, Hungary. His other scores include piano concerto Yunnan Capriccio (2006), was premiered at the Grand Theater of Tours with soloist Georges PludermacherIn March 2008; Splendid Overture (2008), a piece commissioned by the Shanghai Grand Theatre for his10th Anniversary Gala Concert in August 2008.

He has received many international prizes and awards, including the first grand prize of the Concours Dutilleux (France, 2004), Young Chinese Composer Award (Amsterdam, 2005), composition award of the Queen Elisabeth Competition (Belgium, 2006), first prize of the ICOMS (Italy, 2007), first symphony prize of the Ciutat di Tarragona (Spain, 2008).

Among his other works, the most important: the suite “Ch´an”, the series of “Yun”, and the series of “les franges du rêve”. His some scores publish by the Alphonse Leduc Editions in Paris.
